Welcome to the wonderful world of knitting, needlepointing and stitchery!! Whether you are a seasoned veteran or a beginner, we have the supplies and the help necessary to fulfill your creative talents.
KNITTING CLASSES AT THE YARN GARDEN
Most classes are limited to six students, with a minimum of three. Please call the shop to reserve your spot. 410-224-2033
All required materials are offered at the shop, but are not included as part of the class or posted costs. If you wish to purchase materials, please do so prior to class.
All class fees are to be paid at the time of registration. Thank you for your cooperation.
Summer 2010
Do whatever you can to beat the heat -- including knit!
Simple Lace Class: This is an introduction to lace stitches and techniques. We will begin a simple project -- you will choose to make either a scarf or rectangular shawl. We will learn to put in a lifeline and read a chart, discuss troubleshooting, and learn tips to make lace knitting easy.
Class: Wednesday, June 30, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. $20 plus materials
Materials: Straight or circular needles to match the yarn AND extra needles one or two sizes larger than these

Tapestry needle
For Scarf -- 400 yards of DK weight yarn
For Shawl -- 800 yards of DK weight yarn
Prepare: Cast on at least 25 stitches and knit 25 rows to make a swatch of your yarn. The gauge should be about 4.5 stitches per inch. This swatch should not be stiff, it should be soft and easy to bend.
Spring 2010
The weather is changing (we can finally thaw!), and signs of life and color are returning everywhere we look. Whether your desire to knit is brand new, or just coming back to life after a long Winter's nap -- we've put together a schedule of introductory classes to build your skills!
Learn to Knit / Knitting Refresher Classes: This series of classes is designed to take you from newbie knitter to having the skills you’ll need to knit just about any beginning pattern. Take one or all three!
Session I: Learn the Basics of Knitting – Learn to cast on, knit and purl in this two-hour session.
Class: Wednesday, May 5, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. $20 plus materials
Materials: Size 8 straight needles
One skein of smooth worsted weight yarn (wool or wool blend recommended)
(materials kit may be purchased -- including one skein of yarn, 1 set of size 8 wood or bamboo straight needles, point protectors, colored safety pins, tapestry needle, and stitch cards)
Session II: One Step Beyond the Basics – Make fingerless gloves or an iPod / phone case! Learn to shape with increases, to read a pattern, fix your mistakes, and sew a seam.
Class: Wednesday, May 19, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. $20 plus materials
Materials: Size 8 straight needles
Tapestry needle
One skein of smooth worsted weight yarn (wool or wool blend recommended)
Prepare: Cast on at least 20 stitches and knit 20 rows (or bring your work from Session I). Bring prepared work, with yarn and needles.
Session III: Two Steps Beyond the Basics – Make a hat! Learn to knit in the round and to shape your knitting with decreases.
Class: Wednesday, Date to be determined, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. $20 plus materials
Materials: Size 8 needles - 16" circular and 1 set of double-points (wood or bamboo recommended for the double-points)

One skein of smooth worsted weight yarn (wool or wool blend recommended)

Prepare: Cast on at least 20 stitches and knit 20 rows (or bring your work from prior sessions). Bring prepared work, with yarn and needles.
Socks 101 – five hours of instruction across three sessions: Tuesdays, Mar. 16, 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. (one hour), Mar. 23, 12:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. (two hours), and Mar. 30, 12:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. (two hours), $45 plus materials
Are you terrified of turning a heel? Panicky at the prospect of picking up stitches? Doubtful about double points? Do you just long to knit all the gorgeous sock yarn that is available these days? Join us for this three session class and learn all the techniques you’ll need to be able to knit a whole wardrobe of wonderfully warm and wooly socks.
Prerequisite skills: cast on, knit stitch, purl stitch
Materials: 350-400 yards of fingering weight yarn (wool or wool blend recommended)
Set of 5 double-pointed needles, size 2
tapestry needle, stitch marker
Winter 2010 (recently finished -- but hopefully held again next Winter)
Classic Baby Cardigan – three sessions: Tuesday Feb. 2, Feb. 16, and Mar. 2, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. $60
This three session class is designed for the knitter who wants to learn basic sweater construction and finishing. Students will learn seaming techniques, how to pick up stitches for neckband and button bands, blocking for a professional finish and more. At the end of class, you’ll have the skills and confidence to move on to an adult sweater, plus you’ll have an adorable cardigan for a special baby in your life (or a great baby gift in waiting!)
Prerequisite skills: cast on, knit stitch, purl stitch
Materials: Pattern: Theresa Gaffey #46 – Classic Baby Cardigan
410-615 yards DK weight yarn (see pattern for yardage requirements depending on size chosen)
Size US 5 and US 7 needles (if you need to purchase needles, 24” circulars are recommended)
(5) ½” buttons, tapestry needle, stitch holders or scrap yarn
Basic Mittens on 4 Needles - two sessions: Mondays, Feb. 1 and Feb. 8, 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. $30
Mittens are easy and fun to knit, and make wonderful gifts! The pattern we’ll be using is adaptable for different weight yarn, and different sized hands. Once you know the basics, you’ll be able to knit mittens for all your loved ones.
Prerequisite skills: cast on, knit stitch, purl stitch
Materials: Pattern: Ann Norling #8 – Basic Mittens on 4 needles
Yarn that will give you a gauge of 4, 5 or 6 stitches per inch
Set of double pointed needles appropriate for the yarn you are using two stitch markers, tapestry needle, row counter (optional)
Pure and Simple Top Down Sweater – three sessions: Tuesday Feb. 23, Mar. 9 and Mar. 23, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. $60
Make this the year you knit your first adult sweater! Choose from either a cardigan or pullover pattern, which are designed to be knit in one piece so that finishing is kept to a minimum (no seams to sew!). We will discuss how to choose the correct size, how and why to make a gauge swatch and how to add waist shaping. *please bring a sweater that you like the fit of to the first class*
Prerequisite skills: cast on, knit stitch, purl stitch
Materials: Pattern: Knitting Pure and Simple 9724 (pullover) or 9725 (cardigan)
Heavy worsted weight yarn (4 stitches per inch) – see pattern for yardage requirements
24” circular knitting needles in sizes 9 and 6
Size 9 and 6 double pointed needles
Stitch markers, tape measure, tapestry needles
Technique Workshop – Monday, Mar. 15, 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. $20
Take your knitting to the next level. In this two-hour workshop you’ll learn three essential knitting techniques: mattress stitch (for seaming knit garments), kitchener stitch (grafting) and how to knit cables (with and without a cable needle).
Please prepare the following swatches prior to class:
Swatch 1 (make 2) – CO 20 stitches. K2, P2 for one inch, then knit stockinette for two inches. BO.
Swatch 2 (make 2) – CO 20 stitches, knit stockinette for two inches, put on scrap yarn (do not BO).
Swatch 3 (make 1) – CO 18 stitches. Row 1: p2, k6, p2, k6, p2. Row 2: k2, p6, k2, p6, k2. Repeat Rows 1 and 2 twice (6 rows total). Leave on the needles.
Additional materials: tapestry needle, cable needle

Regular Knitting Instruction
We appreciate your interest in classes at The Yarn Garden, but at this time it is difficult to offer daytime or evening classes. Should you have a problem with an instruction or a project, please feel free to stop-in during shop hours and receive free help as time permits.
Returning in October 2010, Dorothy O'Regan will be available every Wednesday and Thursday from 10am until 430pm in the shop for more challenging problems or fitting help. Again, this is at no charge to you.
